Texture = Character!

Flat, smooth, and texture-less walls and ceilings are a thing of the past. Bare drywall is now a rare find in a world of flavorful textured homes. The most popular types of texture are knockdown, popcorn, and orange peel.

Knockdown

This texture is applied by mixing the drywall compound is mixed with water. This mixture is then sprayed onto the surface to be textured. For knockdown texture, the mixture is applied in thicker portions and then passed over with a special spatula to create the flattened areas that give knockdown its characteristic appearance.

Popcorn

Popcorn texture is sometimes called ‘acoustic texture’ as the addition of this texture with its tiny balls help to reduce echo in a space. First, the drywall compound is mixed with water. In order to achieve the raised appearance of popcorn texture, tiny balls are added to the mixture. This mixture is then sprayed onto the surface to be textured.

Orange Peel

To achieve the orange peel look, the drywall compound is mixed with water and then sprayed onto the surface to be textured. A specific roller can be used to create grooves like that of an orange fruit or the technician of the spraying machine or hopper can regulate the spray load to achieve the desired splatter appearance. Orange peel texture can be fine or coarse in its grooves. The desired look will determine the technique to be used.

After the texture has been applied and allowed to dry, the area can then be painted.
